All of us at Whitcoombe House Stables are in shock following the recent death of syndicate member John Hobson, husband of fellow syndicate member Liz.
John knew a nice horse when he was shown one, at the right price and could always be relied upon to join in when he got the right vibe on a horse. One of the first horses he was involved in here was the filly Poster Girl in 2015. She won at Newbury first time out and I remember clearly John being in floods of tears afterwards saying “I knew I was right about her!”. Poster Girl was later sold to USA and won a Group 3.
Later horses included Broad Appeal, who was also a first time out winner and Even Keel who was a decent two year old and subsequently sold very well to Hong Kong.
Recent ownership shares have been held in the progressive dual winning miler Swiss Cheer and various two year olds including a promising Markaz colt Mark Of Respect which he shared with wife Liz.
Visits to Whitcoombe Stables were always a pleasure to have from John. He always arrived with a smile and loved to engage enthusiastically and knowledgeably with the staff. The recent Covid Lockdown situation had denied him the opportunity to watch the development in the two year olds which was a great shame.
We are so very grateful for the support he gave the stable for so long and for the positive encouragement he gave me personally through the highs and lows we shared and for the friendship he shared with our other owners. RIP John.
